Abstract:
In this experimental study, Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: Group A, 33 rats fed with diet purchased from endemic goitre area and iodine-free distilled water; Group B, 33 rats fed with the same diet of group A but 50% of casein was added and iodine-free distilled water; Group G, 33 rats fed with general rat's diet and ordinary tap water as control. After three and a half months, blood taken from ocular vein was measured for thyroid hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone, and thyroid glands were taken for histologic examination. The results have proved that typical iodine deficient goitre and hypothyroid models have been successfully established in rats from group A and casein can prevent rats from iodine-deficient goitre and hypothyroidism. The mechanism might be that casein may enhance iodine transportation and utilization in thyroid.
