Abstract:
48 patients with multiple myeloma (MM) had been misdiagnosed as disorders of bone, the kedney, the liver and the hemapoietic or the nervous system. The misdiagnosis rate was 66.7%. An analysis suggests that MM should be suspected if a patient who is over 40 years of age has any of the following conditions: progressive bone pain, unexplained anemia, rouleaux-formation, a great increase in ESR, hyperglobulinemia of unknown cause, repeated infection, persistent proteinuria, renal failure with no hypertension, skeletal tumor of flat bones, spinal cord compression, radiculopathy, etc. further studies must then be done to deride whether the patient is suffered from MM or not.
