Secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients receiving hemodialysis

Abstract:
Evaluation of the prevalence of secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) and the effectiveness as well as side effects of calcitriol therapy in 40 chronic renal failure patients with last stage receiving hemodialysis in Thong Nhat hospital from March, 2003 to Janruary, 2004. Results: Hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and HPT are very common in elderly patients, occurring in 100%, 82,5% and 72,5%, respectively. Analysis of patient's diet showed that 100% patients is on low protein, calcium, daily energy. 97,5% is normal or low phosphorous intake. Concentration of serum parathyroid hormone, calcium, phosphate in chronic hemodialysis patients pre and post-treatment decreased clearly, but side effects increased serum phosphate level
