Abstract:
Metoclopramide (MCP) stimulating test for prolactin (PRL) secretion was performed on 5 normally cycling women (early follicular phase, EF), 4 early puerperal women and 17 patients with galactorrhea and anovulation. The mean serum PRL level in EF group increased more than 7-fold of the mean basal PRL level after MCP injection but only 1.51 and 1.28 times of that in postpartum and galactorrhea-anovulation groups respectively. However, no significant difference was noted between the pituitary tumor and non-tumor groups, thus MCP stimulating test for PRL secretion was not helpful to differential diagnosis between functional hyperprolactinemia and microprolactinoma. The relationship and management of these two clinical entities were also discussed.
