Abstract:
Twenty three cases of thyrotoxicosis associated with leucopenia or neutropenia were treated with lithium carbonate alone, which was given orally in dosage of 750-1,000 mg per day for about 6 months, except one who discontinued the medication because of liver disease. After treatment almost all symptoms were relieved in 20 cases, and serum levels of T4 and T3 fell to normal in 15 of 18 cases who were reexamined later. The peripheral leucocyte count and absolute number of granulocytes increased to normal ranges in 22 cases. Few serious side-reactions were seen. The results indicate that lithium carbonate is an effective and relatively safe agent for the treatment of this condition.
