Prevalence of Pyuria and Asymptomatic Bacteriuria in High School girls in Korea.

Abstract:
Asymptomatic bacteriuria is occurred by chance and it should be emphasized that asymptomatic bacteriuria is a laboratory diagnosis and is not necessarily a disease entity. But schoolgirls shown to have asymptomatic episodes of bacteriuria in the past remain at high risk of developing symptomatic infection at the time of marriage of pregnancy. Out of 451 high schoolgirls, 4l7 were screened for pyuria and asymptomatic bacteriuria by the examination of mid-stream urine specimen and urine culture during the period from June 22, 1981 to July 24, 1981. And the following results were obtained. 1. 417 of 461 schoolgirls were participated (92.5%) and the age distribution ranged from 15 years to 19 years (mean age, 16.8 years). 2. Out of 417 schoolgirls, 22 (5.3%) had pyuria (>10 W.B.C./HPF.). 3. Out of 417 schoolgirls, 7 (1.7%) had asymptomatic bacteriuria (>10(5) colony/ml). The isolated organisms were Staphylococcus aureus (3 cases), E. coli (2 cases) and Enterobacter (2 cases). 4. We treated these pyuric and asymptomatic bacteriuric schoolgirls with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and nitrofurantion, and recommended to have follow-up check at three months interval.
