Abstract:
A prospective, non-control study was conducted on 31 eyes (24 patients: 7 male, 17 female) having cataract in eyes with severe myopia (≥ 26mm) have been treated by phacoemulsification technique and implantation of intraocular posterior chamber lens with suitable capacity. Results: 58% cases achieved visual acuity of 5/10 or better. The mean preoperative spherical equivalent was -15.84% ± 3.1D and the mean postoperative spherical equivalent was -0.95 ± 2.7D. The operation can be done without difficulties, especially if lens do not have much opaque, nucleus of lens is not too hard and have pink light of pupil. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were few. Posterior capsule opaque was the commonest complication (9.7%). 2 eyes have uveitis and 1 eye with corneal edema, both were completely resolved by topical treatment without sequelae. Phacoemulsification and implantation of intraocular posterior chamber lens with suitable capacity is safe and efficient method for the treatment of cataract in eyes with severe myopia
