Cigarette smoking and risk for systemic lupus erythematosus: A Meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective To determine the relationship between cigarette smoking and the incidence of systemic lupus erythematosus.Methods Database including Cochrane Library,Pubmed,OVID and Elsevier were electronically searched to collect case-control and cohort studies on the relationship between cigarette smoking and incidence of systemic lupus erythematosus.The literatures were screened and the data were extracted independently according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria.The quantitative analysis were performed by using Stata 12.0 software.Results The pooled OR values (95％ confidence interval)of current smoking and ever smoking were 1.82 (95％CI 1.42～2.34) and 1.22 (95％CI 0.96～1.56) respectively.Conclusions Our Meta-analysis revealed a moderate but statistically significant association between current smoking and development of systemic lupus erythematosus.However,it is still not confirmed whether the past smoking is one of the risk factors of systemic lupus erythematosus.
