Abstract:
Midkine (MK),a member of the heparin-binding growth factors, was firstly discovered in mouse embryonic carcinoma cells by Japanese scholars.MK functions in a variety of biological processes, including neurogenesis, activation of plasminogen activator, wound tissue repair and inflammatory response.More importantly,MK is closely related to tumor progress and metastasis.Current studies show that MK is over-expressed in various human malignant tumors, making it as a promising tumor biomarker and possibly a new molecular target for tumor therapy. This review will illustrate the molecular structure and functional mechanisms of MK,as well as its roles in the diagnosis, progression monitoring and prognosis prediction of colorectal cancer.
