Effects of electro-acupuncture combined with hyperbaric oxygen on cognitive ability and plasma homocysteine in patients with dementia after cerebral infarction

Abstract:
Objective To explore the influence of electro-acupuncture combined with hyperbaric oxygen on cognitive ability and plasma homocysteine(Hcy) in patients with dementia after cerebral infarction.Methods 68 patients with dementia after cerebral infarction were randomly divided into the control group (34 cases) and the observation group(34 cases).The patients in the control group were treated through conventional treatment,and the patients in the observation group were treated through electric stimulation plus hyperbaric oxygen,one time every day,15 times was a course of treatment.The intelligence was evaluated and the level of Hcy was detected after treatment.Results Before treatment,the MMSE score and the plasma Hcy level of the observation group was (19.01 ±6.92) points,(26.84 ± 9.06) μmol/L,respectively,those of the control group was (18.76 ± 6.71) points,(26.14 ±8.79) μmol/L,respectively.After treatment,the MMSE score and the plasma Hcy level of the observation group was (25.77 ± 8.21) points,(15.15 ± 5.24) μmol/L,respectively,those of the control group was (20.18 ± 7.52) points,(21.32 ± 6.53) μmol/L,respectively.After treatment,the MMSE score of the observation group was significantly increased (t =3.6710,P < 0.05),and there was no significant change in the control group (t =0.5472,P > 0.05).The plasma Hcy level was significantly reduced after treatment in both two groups (t =2.0345,P < 0.01,t =2.5667,P <0.05),and that in the observation group was siginificantly lower than the control group (t =4.2970,P < 0.05).Conclusion Electric stimulation combined with hyperbaric oxygen can improve cognitive ability and decrease plasma Hcy level in patients with dementia after cerebral infarction.
