Abstract:
Objective To observe the effect of two different periodontal therapies on serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α)in elderly patients with coronary heart disease. Methods Totally 42 elderly patients with severe periodontitis were randomized into two groups:periodontal initial therapy and periodontal flap surgery group. The percentage of bleeding on probing (BOP),probing depth (PD) and serum levels of CRP and TNF-α were recorded at baseline and 12 weeks after treatment. Results The percentage of BOP,PD and serum levels of CRP and TNF-α in all patients were significantly reduced at 12 weeks after treatment as compared with baseline (all P<0.05).Serum levels of CRP and TNF-α were lower in periodontal flap surgery than in periodontal initial therapy at 12 weeks after treatment [(3.4±9.1) μg/L vs.(2.6 ±7.9)μg/L,(4.4±1.8)mg/L vs.(3.5±2.1)mg/L,both P<0.05].Conclusions Compared with periodontal initial therapy, periodontal flap surgery maybe better to reduce the levels of serum inflammatory markers.
