Abstract:
Objective To explore the relationship between seizures and lacunar infarction in the elderly patients. Methods Totally 32 patients with seizures defined by International League Against Seizures (ILAE) and history of lacunar infarction as seizures group and 40 cases with lacunar infarction without seizures as control group were enrolled in our hospital Department of Neurology from Jan.2008 to May 2011.All patients were screened for risk factors of cerebrovascular disease and received magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, electroencephalogram (EEG) and minimental state examination (MMSE). Results No significant differences between two groups were observed in vascular risk factors, distribution of the lacunar infarction focus (P>0.05).The average score of MMSE were (22.31 ± 5.90) in seizures group and (21.85 ± 5.72) in control group with no difference (t=1.99,P=0.42).The focal or diffuse slow wave and epileptiform discharge on EEG appeared in 5 cases,7 cases and 3 cases in seizures group and in 4 cases,5 cases and zero case in control group, respectively, with remarkable difference in epileptiform discharge between two groups (x2 =3.91,P=0.04). Conclusions Seizures induced by lacunar infarction in elderly patients may be related to wide range of cerebral ischemia and hypoxia.
