Abstract: Since portal vein arterialization(PVA) was firstly introduced as a treatment in patients with portal hypertension due to liver cirrhosis, the concept of PVA has drawn much attention. In special situations, in hepatobiliary surgery, this procedure remains useful. However, PVA is unphysiological and there is much controversy on its use.This article reviews the current status of PVA in hepatic artery resection or injury, in acute liver failure and in liver transplantation, and suggests future directions in research in PVA.
