Prevalence and influencing factors of knee primary osteoarthritis in the elderly aged 60 years and over in Changxindian district

Abstract:
Objective To observe the incidence rate, related risk factors for knee primary osteoarthritis in the elderly in the urban and rural of Changxindian district of Beijing. Methods The 1507 people aged 60 years and over living in Changxindian area for a long time were investigated from June 2006 to March 2008. The unified questionnaire, including general state of health, present history,past history, physical examination etc, was carried out and all subjects were given normotopia and lateral position radiographic examination in both knees. After exclusions of other etiological factors, some of them were finally diagnosed as idiopathic osteoarthritis of knee if they had clinical symptoms and a radiographic grade above Kellgren & Lawrence Ⅱ grade. The underling influence factors were explored by means of multiple stepwise regression analysis. Results Totally, 851 objects were investigated in this study (266 men and 585 women) with the average age of 67. 9 years. The average morbidity rate was 38. 1% (male 25.6%and female 43.9%) and higher along with the increase of age and BMI. People living in cold-moist circumstance had a higher rate. Conclusions Age, female,obesity and cold-moist circumstance are the risk factors of knee osteoarthritis.
