Abstract:
Erythromycin is a motilin receptor agonist. It can mimic the effect of motilin to promote the gastrointestinal motility and facilitate the enteral feeding in preterm infants. However, the mechanism how erythromycin enhances the enteral feeding in preterm infants hasn't fully been investigated. There are conflicting findings about the effects and side effects of erythromycin for the management of feeding intolerance in preterm infants. Also there isn't a unified standard about the suitable object, the way of administration, the dosage and course of erythromycin. It's necessary to do further research and long-term follow up so that we can make better use of erythromycin for improving feeding intolerance in preterm infants.
