Abstract:
The safety and effectiveness of preventive antibiotherapy in appendicectomies were studied in the Dep. of Surgery, Khanh Hoa province hospital. A prospective study was carried out in 1999 for a sample of 235 cases of appendicitis of which 107 patients were assigned as control group, and 128 as case group. The preventive and therapeutic antibiotherapy were indicated for 2 groups, respectively. The results were reported as follows: good: 95.3%, bad: 0% for the case group as compared with 94.4% and 0.9% for the control group. The mean duration by days were 5.14 +/- 1.13 and 5.64+/-1.49 respectively. The mean cost of antibiotics used for each patient were 88,297 VND and 257,278 VND for each group. A conclusion was set that for our present hospital environment, preventive antibiotherapy is necessary and cost-effective; and can be applied for all clean- contaminated surgical operations for the purpose of lowering the health cost and at the same time to ensure the safety and to bring out good results of surgical interventions.
