Abstract:
Acute scrotum is a clinical syndrome that is defined as an acute, painful swelling of the scrotum or its contents accompanied by local sign and general symptom. Evaluation of the acute scrotum is one of the area of urology in which both clinical skills and the ability to select and interprete the laboratory data can be taxed to the maximum. It is of great importance in this evaluation to differentiate surgical from nonsurgical lesion. So authors reports a clinical study was made on 22 cases with acute scrotum under the 20 years old who had been admitted to Department of Urology, Kuro Hospital, Korea University Medical Center, during the period from September. 1983 to July, 1989. The results were follows : 1. The incidence of acute scrotum under the 20 years old was 0.7% of total admitted urologic patients. 2. The most common age group was 15-20 year of giving the rate 31.8% ( 7cases), while 3 cases ( 13.6%) in infant were developed. 3. The most common disease was testicular torsion giving the rate or 54,5 % (12cases). 4. Of 22cases, surgical treatment was performed in 15 cases and of these, testicular torsion was 11 cases as the cause of acute scrotum. 5. Because the testicular torsion was major as the cause of acute scrotum, the surgical exploration will be necessary to rule out torsion and to prevent testicular loss in equivocal cases.
