- Abstract: Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by a compromised bone strength and an increased risk of fracture. Older women with low bone mineral density (BMD) have a higher prevalence of atherosclerotic vascular disease (coronary artery disease, ischemic stroke, or peripheral arterial disease) than older women with normal BMD. Also stroke is frequently followed by extensive bone loss, precipitating the increased fracture risk in survivors. Complications from fractures lead to increased morbidity and mortality. In this paper, the clinical evidence, diagnosis and treatments of osteoporosis will be reviewed.
