Abstract:
Healing process and histologic findings induced by various suture materials and suture methods were studied in this experiment. Albino rabbits were used and these rabbits were anesthesized by intravenous pentothal sodium injection(15 mg/kg) and 2 % lidocaine retrobulbar injection. The eye ball was luxated by bridle sutures on the sup. and info rectus muscles and the cornea was incised first with 15 Bard-Parker knife and the wound was extended with corneoscleral scissors 5 mm in length about 1 mm apart from the limbus at 12 and 9 o/c positions. Two interrupted penetrating and shndard sutures with 8-0 catgut were made at 12 and 9 o/c position respectively on the Rt. eye. Two interrupted standard sutures were made at 9 o/c position with 8-0 catgut suture and 2 interrupted standard sutered were made at 12 o/c position with 6-0 black silk suture on the Lt. eye. These rabbits were sacrificed at interval of 1, 2, and 3 weeks by overdose of pentothal sodium and eyes were immediately enucleated and fixed in 10 % formalin and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin. The specimens were observed under light microscope. The differences in healing process and tissue reaction to catgut were not significant between the penetrating and standard suture group. The tissue reaction was milder in silk group and vascularization near the wound was found in catgut group.
