Abstract:
Carotid endarterectomy is now accepted as the best therapeutic modality for symptomatic and asymptomatic high grade stenosis of the internal carotid artery. With the increased use of noninvasive duplex scanning surveillance for patients who have undergone carotid endarterectomy, recurrent carotid stenosis is diagnosed with increasing frequency. Controversy exists regarding the clinical significance and natural history of restenosis, as well as the role of surgical management and the long-term results of reoperation for recurrent stenosis.
