Significance of Mapping Cancerous and Precancerous Bladder Changes.

Abstract:
Twenty nine total cystectomy specimens with primary bladder carcinoma were examined by step sectioning(mapping) to illustrate the associated abnormal lesions adjacent to and remote from the main cancers. The results of analysis are as follows : 1. All cases of papillary type were in low grade and low stage, but cases of nodular type were mostly in high grade and high stage. 2. In area adjacent to gross tumor, carcinoma in situ and dysplasia were associated in 42.9 percent and 50.0 percent respectively, while in area remote from gross tumor, carcinoma in situ and dysplasia in 32.1 percent and 42.9 percent respectively. 3. The associated rates of abnormal mucosa were higher in cases of nodular or mixed type than papillary type, high grade than low grade and high stage than low stage (p<0.05). 4. The cases with carcinoma in situ showed higher lymphatic and venous invasion rates 5. In cases of carcinoma associated with carcinoma in situ or vascular invasion, the survival rate was lower in their follow up.
