Abstract:
Records of 120 cases of exchange transfurious performed at Ewha Womans University Hospital were reviewed and analyzed. 1) 0.45% of infants born at Ewha Hospital had exchange transfusions. Of the total infants exchanged, 33.9% was infants born outside but admitted due to hyperbilirubinmia. 2) Hemolysis due to ABO incompatibility was the most common (36.7%) etiology of jaundice and the incidence of repeated exchange transfusion was higher (66%) than cases due to other etiologies. 3) The rate of failure to complete the transfusion as planned was 2.5% and in the majority cases the procedure were stopped due to technical problems and detdrioration of clinical status of infants. 4) There was no evidence of serious or permanent sequelae due to the exchange transfusion in this study. The mortalityrate was 1.0% which was comparable with the result of other studies.
