Abstract:
Alpha-FP is a major serum binding protein produced by the fetal yolk sac, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. It may be produced by pure embryonal carcinoma, teratocarcinoma, yolk sac tumor, or combined tumors but not by pure choriocarcinoma or pure seminoma. HCG is secreted by the placenta but in germ cell tumors, syncytiotrophoblastic cells have been found responsible for the production of HCG. Recently, we experienced a case of mixed germ cell tumor composed of mainly teratoma and seminoma which is producing alpha-FP and beta-HCG.
