Abstract:
Sialic acid is a member of the nine-carbonic acidic monosaccharide family, which is abnormally expressed in various malignant tumors and significantly associated with prognosis of patients. The addition of sialic acid to glycoproteins and glycolipids causes sialylation, which is a post-translational modification usually found at the end of glycan chains and regulates various physiological and pathological processes. Abnormal sialylation would affect many critical processes in tumors, including immune evasion, resistance to apoptosis, metastasis and proliferation. Therefore, exploring the mechanisms of sialylation in tumors is beneficial for finding new cancer treatment methods. This article reviews the relationship between sialylation and tumors.
