Abstract:
Biliary tract cancer (BTC) is a highly heterogeneous and invasive tumor of digestive system, and the main pathological type is adenocarcinoma. According to its anatomic location, BTC includes the gallbladder cancer and cholangiocarcinoma. Cholangiocarcinoma can be further classified into intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (eCCA), with eCCA being subdivided into perihilar cholangiocarcinoma and distal cholangiocarcinoma based on the confluence of the cystic duct and common hepatic duct. With significant advances in the field of targeted and immunotherapy, BTC in different anatomic locations also exhibits inconsistent response to the same treatment. This article aims to review the heterogeneity among different sites of BTC and discuss its advances in epidemiology and treatment.
