Abstract:
To observe the protective effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on cerebral function in middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) rats and probe the involvement of ameliorating oxidative stress. The cerebral ischemia/reperfusion model was established by the method of middle cerebral artery occlusion. EA at "Renzhong" and "Baihui" acupoints were carried on and stimulation produced by the G6805 generator. The neurological deficit score was recorded and the brain infarction volume was estimated by triphenyltetrazoliumchloride (TTC)stain. And the content of Malondialdehyde (MDA), the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were analyzed. The results show that the neurological deficit score and cerebral infarct volume were both lower in the MCAO + EA group than those in the MCAO.Significant increase of SOD and GSH-Px activities has been determined in MCAO, but they were attenuated in MCAO +EA. The cerebral MDA level was deceased in MCAO + EA compared with that in MCAO. No changes of the antioxidant enzymes activities were observed in Sham and Sham + EA. The present results suggested that EA might effectively protect the cerebral function and decrease the volume of cerebral infarction markedly, in which the alleviation of oxidative stress and reduction of lipid peroxidation may be involved.
