Analysis and outlook of professional challenges and professional anticipation in Chinese male nurses

Abstract:
Objective To explore and analyze the professional characteristics, challenges and anticipation in registered male nurses in China. Methods Male nurses working in various medical institutions at different levels were selected by convenient sampling through academic associations of male nurses and portal websites and investigated with the self-designed online questionnaire in June 2017. Results Totally 10 676 registered male nurses from 312 cities were investigated. Their average age was (27.80±4.46) years, and their length of working was (5.26±4.47) years. They mainly came from ClassⅢ Grade A hospitals in first-and second-tier cities. Their professional challenges mainly came from economic pressure (1 563/10 676, 22.7%), professional development (1 208/10 676, 17.5%) and gender difference (1 031/10 676, 14.9%). The major support they anticipated included increased salary (2 453/10 676, 41.5%), assisted professional development (2 107/10 676, 35.6%) and improved social status (1 887/10 676, 31.9%). Conclusions The group of male nurses in China has been expanded, and they play important roles in many fields. Relevant authorities and managers should pay more attention to male nurses, provide proper guidance for their professional guidance, and implement relevant supporting measures. They should drive enable male nurses to develop healthily and rapidly in terms of policy, management and male nurses themselves, and thus accelerate the development of nursing profession.
