Abstract:
ObjectiveIn-depth interviews with family caregivers of children with schizophrenia to explore the experience of the caregivers' benefit finding were conducted, in order to provide evidence for continuing treatment and rehabilitation of children with schizophrenia. MethodsBy phenomenological research method, a semi-structured interview was conducted for 15 family caregivers of children with schizophrenia who were hospitalized in Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University from May to August 2018 selected by purposive sampling. Colaizzi seven-step analysis method was used to collate and analyze the interview results. ResultsFamily caregivers of children with schizophrenia have experience of benefit finding, which can be refined into four themes: forming a new philosophy of life; having a new understanding of health; improving personal ability; and perceiving the support of relatives. ConclusionsFamily caregivers of children with schizophrenia can experience the benefit finding from the process of their children's illness. It is suggested that medical staff should guide caregivers of children to further find the benefit from the process of illness from the perspective of positive psychology and give full play to the family function of children so as to promote the early recovery of children with schizophrenia.
