Effects of head nurses' service-oriented leadership behavior on nurses' quality of professional life

Abstract:
Objective? To explore the effects of head nurses' service-oriented leadership behavior on nurses' quality of professional life and to provide a basis for effective nursing management measures. Methods? The nurses from 3 Class Ⅲ Grade A hospitals in Ningbo were selected using convenient sampling from June to September 2018 and investigated with the general information questionnaire, Head Nurse Service-Oriented Leadership Behavior Scale (HNSLBS) and Quality of Nursing Work Life (QNWL). Totally 600 questionnaires were distributed, and 592 valid questionnaires were collected, with an effective collection rate of 98.67%. Results? The HNSLBS score was (81.01±16.48); the QNWL score was (152.48±25.86); the total score and scores of various dimensions of HNSLBS were positively correlated with QNWL scores (P< 0.01). According to multivariate linear regression analysis, head nurses' service-oriented leadership behavior, nurses' night shift, place of birth and gender were the main influencing factors to nurses' quality of professional life (P<0.01). Conclusions? Head nurses' service-oriented leadership behavior and nurses' quality of professional life were stay at a low level. Head nurses' service-oriented leadership behavior have impacts on nurses' quality of professional life. Head nurses should adopt service-oriented leadership behavior properly, which helps to improve nurses' quality of professional life, stabilize the nursing team, and improve the quality of nursing service.
