Demand of standardized patients nurse-patient communication practice curriculum among undergraduate nursing students

Abstract:
Objective To understand the status of nurse-patient communication competence among undergraduate nursing students and their demands of standardized patients (SP) nurse-patient communication practice curriculum,so as to guide to develop a nurse-patient communication practice curriculum based on SP.Methods From August to October 2017,we selected 277 undergraduate nursing students from Grade 2014 of the affiliated hospital of a medical university as subjects by convenience sampling.All of the students were investigated with the Nurse-Patient Communication Competence Scale,Nurse-Patient Communication Practical Competence Cognition and SP Practice Curriculum Demand Attitude Questionnaire,Content Demand Questionnaire of SP Nurse-Patient Communication Practice Curriculum.Results The score of Nurse-Patient Communication Competence Scale,the cognitive level of communication practical competence,SP nurse-patient communication practice curriculum demands attitude and demand on SP nurse-patient communication practice curriculum content of 277 nursing students was (73.78 ± 4.86),(15.36 ± 3.46),(26.80 ± 4.63) and (46.31 ± 6.55) respectively.The cognition of nurse-patient communication practical competence of nursing students and SP nurse-patient communication practice curriculum demands attitude were positively correlated with demand on curriculum content (r=0.150,0.221;P < 0.05).Conclusions Medical universities need to establish the SP nurse-patient communication practice curriculum in line with nursing characteristics according to the status of nurse-patient communication competence and demand on curriculum content of nursing students.
