Analysis of the present situation and influence factors on tobacco control of perioperative patients with esophageal cancer

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the present situation on the tobacco control of perioperative patients with esophageal cancer, and analyze its influential factors.Methods A total of 110 perioperative patients with esophageal cancer were investigated with questionnaires which included self-design scale and Fagerstrom Test For Nicotine Dependence from March to August 2016 in one tertiary specific hospital in Beijing. Results The 104 patients with esophageal cancer were smoker or quite smoking below 2 years, with smoking at the age of 14-60 years old, 1-18 cigarettes per day; the Fagerstrom Test For Nicotine Dependence was (3.85±2.42) score and nicotine dependence reached low or medium degree was 64.4%. Multiple regression analysis showed patients had high nicotine dependence in young, low BMI, low education, high family income, living with smoker, easy smoking, never or mean to quit smoking, and feeling hard to quit smoking (P<0.05). Conclusions Medical staff should strengthen the awareness on the smoking control in esophageal cancer patients, and improve education and supervision, so as to prepare well for patients operation. Society and medical staff require to focus on the education of tobacco risks for public and patients.
