Qualitative study on rescue and nursing experience during typhoon disasters of nurses in tertiary hospitals in Hainan province

Abstract:
Objective To explore the real psychological experience of nurses in tertiary hospitals in Hainan province when participating in rescue and nursing during typhoon disasters, and to provide a basis for targeted disaster recue training for nurses.Methods Totally 16 nurses from Hainan General Hospital and affiliated hospitals of Hainan Medical University who participated in rescue and nursing during typhoon disasters were selected by purposive sampling and investigated through semi-structured interview, and relevant data were then analyzed with Colaizzi seven-step method based on phenomenological research in qualitative studies. Results Totally 3 themes were found: with physical and psychological stress, they were nervous and panicked; through self-reflection and self-improvement, they took active part in disaster rescue; and they had the motivation to move forward when they were recognized and appreciated.Conclusions Class Ⅲ grade A hospitals in Hainan province should conduct disaster rescue training intentionally and strategically, strengthen disaster nursing management, pay attention to negative feelings of rescue and nursing staffs, and provide them with psychological support so as to enhance their rescue capabilities during typhoon disasters.
