Survey research on the core competence of new nurses after one year's standardized training

Abstract:
Objective To explore the core competency of new nurses after one year's standardized training,and analyze its influencing factors.Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. Competency inventory for registered nurse was used to investigate 77 nurses who have been registered nurses for a year of Peking Union Medical College Hospital in August 2015,meanwhile,t-test and analysis of variance were used to compare the core competence between new nurses with different characteristics.Result The total score of core competence of new nurses was (159.55 ±27.16),83.12% of whom were in the middle level of core competency. The dimension of legal and ethical practice scored the highest while critical thinking and research aptitude scored the lowest. Nurses who have rotated to intensive care unit (ICU) scored slightly lower in the dimension of interpersonal relation than those not (P<0.05). New nurses of operating room scored lower in the dimension of teaching-coaching than nurses of other departments (P<0.05).Conclusions The core competency of new nurses are in middle level after one year's standardized training. The self-reported core competency of new nurses provides references for evaluating the training program and developing a hierarchy training program.
