Status survey and analysis on incidence of nursing interruptions in medication preparation in general surgical wards

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the incidence of nursing interruptions in medication preparation in general surgical wards,and analyze the reasons,so as to provide reference for dosing safety in clinical nursing.Methods From March to April 2016,nurses in department of general surgery of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital were observed for 105 times about interruptions in medication preparation,and the number of times,duration,sources and outcome of the interruption were recorded.Results Totally 402 times of interruptions occurred in 39 hours' observation,with 10.3 interruptions per hour. (3.83±1.92) interruptions occurred and lasted for (4.70±2.50) minutes in each observation. The number of times,frequency and duration of interruptions were significantly different at different times (P<0.05). The main sources and reasons of interruption were nurse colleagues (34.8%) and giving information (23.8%).Conclusions Interruptions occurres frequently during medication preparation in general surgical department,with various sources and negative outcomes. Strategies should be taken to reduce unnecessary interruptions,so that medication safety in nursing can be secured.
