Effects of job satisfaction and life satisfaction on the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement of clinical nurses

Abstract:
Objective To explore the effects of job satisfaction and life satisfaction on the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement of the clinical nurses, in order to provide effective evidence of corresponding measures for managers to enhance nurses′work engagement. Methods A total of 380 clinical nurses were selected randomly from a tertiary referral hospital in Xi′an, who were investigated by emotional intelligence scale, job satisfaction scale, life satisfaction scale, and work engagement scale. Results We distributed 380 questionnaires, collected 378, and rejected 14 invalid one after analysis, so it was total 364 effective questionnaires. The total score of 364 participates′ emotional intelligence was (60. 41 ± 8. 11), life satisfaction score (19. 26 ± 6. 85), job satisfaction score (71. 85 ± 10. 21), and work engagement score (82. 18 ± 16. 62). Clinical nurse′s emotional intelligence, life satisfaction and job satisfaction had positive correlation with work engagement (r=0. 40-0. 65,P<0. 01);clinical nurse′s emotional intelligence had direct predictive value to work engagement;job satisfaction and life satisfaction both played part of mediating effect on the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement. Conclusions Job satisfaction and life satisfaction both play part of mediating effect on the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement, so nursing administrators should effectively enhance the emotional intelligence of the clinical nurses, and assist the nurses, at an individual level, to create better job and life satisfactions so as to improve the level of their work engagement.
