Effect of lactation confirmation method on the confidence of breastfeeding among puerperas

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the actual lactation situation at postpartum 24 h, and explore the effects of lactation confirmation on maternal breastfeeding confidence. Methods A total of 110 puerperas were chosen by convenient sampling method from April to June 2014 in general hospital of PLA and we investigated the puerperas whether they had lactation in postpartum 24 h. According to the investigation, puerperas who had lactation were chosen and divided into experimental group ( routine nursing and lactation confirmation method) and control group ( routine nursing ) with 42 puerperas each group. 24-48 h postpartum, the behavior and confidence of breastfeeding were compared. SPSS 16. 0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results A total of 110 puerpera, in which 26 them believed they had lactation in postpartum 24 h while 84 of them thought they did not have lactation. Believing lactation puerperas had higher score of breastfeeding times and confidence than those of no believing lactation puerperas (t=5. 58,2. 53;P<0. 05). The pureperas of non-confidence for lactation group confirmed by lactation confirmation method, in which 38 puerperas already had lactation; after lactation confirmation, the pureperas of experimental group had higher times of breastfeeding and breastfeeding confidence (t=5. 04,2. 69;P <0. 05). Conclusions Lactation confirmation helps puerperas to aware their actual lacation, which can increase the lactation confidence, therefore reduce the interference of exclusive breastfeeding, and had positive meaning to promote exclusive breastfeeding success.
