Survey on gender stereotype of university students′ impression on nursing occupation

Abstract:
Objective To understand the gender stereotype of university students′ impression on nursing occupation. Methods Totals of 259 university students were surveyed by using the self-designed questionnaire from March to June in 2014. Results There were 22. 8% university students who thought that male was very suitable for nursing occupation. There were 28. 6% university students who thought that male was suitable for nursing occupation. There were 48. 6% university students who thought that male was not suitable for nursing occupation. There was no significant difference in different genders (χ2 =3. 014,P>0. 05). And there was a significant difference in different ethnic groups (χ2 =38. 240,P<0. 05). There were 51. 0% university students who thought that female was more suitable for nursing occupation than male. There were 49. 0% university students who thought that female was not much more suitable for nursing occupation than male. There was no significant difference in different genders (χ2 =1. 653,P >0. 05). And there was a significant difference in different ethnic groups (χ2 =4. 663,P<0. 05). Conclusions The university students have the gender stereotype impression on nursing occupation. The popularization of male nurses should be strengthened, and an acceptable and warm environment of male nurses should be built and the social restriction should be reduced.
