Intervention effect of group psychological counseling on mental status of nurses in Operating Room

Abstract:
Objective To understand nurses′ psychological status in Operating Room ( OR ) and evaluate the intervention effect of group psychological counseling on OR nurses. Methods The questionnaire survey was adopted to investigate 122 OR nurses′ mental status in 5 military hospitals and 3 local level three hospitals by chester sampling. A total of 32 nurses in whole, who had positive symptom of psychological assessment, received group psychological counseling 8 times. After consultation, the questionnaires were used again and the comparison was made with 32 people. At the same time, self-rating anxiety scale ( SAS) and self-rating depression scale ( SDS) were used for evaluation. Results To the 122 operating room nurses, the average scores of somatization was (1. 88 ± 0. 76), anxiety (1. 78 ± 0. 80), depression (1. 95 ± 0. 88), obsessive disorder (2. 05 ± 0. 84), interpersonal relationship (1. 84 ± 0. 75) and phobic anxiety (1. 43 ± 0. 72) in the SCL-90 scale higher than those of the Chinese norm. The differences were statistically significant ( t=7. 41, 5. 38,5. 65, 5. 65, 2. 80, 3. 07;P<0. 05). The scores of SAS scale (46. 40 ± 6. 53) and SDS scale (51. 82 ± 8. 87) were higher than norm in China, and the difference was statistically significant ( t=4. 06, 12. 38;P<0. 05). To the 32 operating room nurses who attended group psychological counseling, the average scores of somatization (2. 01 ± 0. 87), anxiety (1. 88 ± 0. 75), depression (2. 00 ± 0. 98), obsessive disorder (2. 13 ± 0. 94) and interpersonal relationship ( 1. 96 ± 0. 79 ) in SCL-90 scale before intervention were higher than (1. 54 ± 0. 57), (1. 54 ± 0. 45), (1. 58 ± 0. 53), (1. 72 ± 0. 48) and (1. 50 ± 0. 87) after intervention with statistical significantce (t=2. 56, 2. 20, 2. 13, 2. 20, 2. 09;P<0. 05). SAS scale (45. 58 ± 6. 47) and SDS scale (42. 25 ± 11. 24) were lower than SAS scale (59. 84 ± 7. 24) and SDS scale (61. 76 ± 6. 32) after intervention, and the difference was statistically significant (t=8. 31, 8. 56;P<0. 01). Conclusions Group psychological counseling can effectively improve the OR nurses′mental status.
