A survey about social support of disabled elderly in two communities of Beijing

Abstract: Objective To investigate social support of disabled elderly, so as to provide the scientific evidences for improving the social support for disabled elderly. Methods The general information questionnaire, activity of daily living scale ( ADL) and the social support rating scale ( SSRS) were used for survey on the 220 disabled elderly in two communities in Haidian district of Beijing from November 2013 to January 2014. Results In 220 disabled elderly, a total of 65 persons (29. 55%) received low level of social support, 155 persons (70. 45%) medium level of social support, and none of them received high level of social support. The higher the degree of disability was, the lower the total score and three dimension scores of social support (F=64. 01,44. 11,40. 91,43. 00;P<0. 05). Conclusions The serious disabled elderly should be paid more attention, and a variety of methods should be used to improve the social support for the disabled elderly in order to improve their quality of life.
