Correlation between mental health and the coping style in patients with nodular goiter

Abstract:
Objective To assess the relationship between the psychological state and the coping style of patients with nodular goiter. Methods A total of 169 nodular goiter patients, who came from general surgical department, the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, were asked to complete general information, symptom checklist scale (SCL-90), simplified coping style questionnaire (SCSQ) and self-composed general questionnaire. Results Nodular goiter patients′self-rating scale points showed somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety and horror scores were (1. 59 ± 0. 56), (1. 37 ± 0. 46), (1. 50 ± 0. 56), (1. 34 ± 0. 48) significantly higher than the norm (1. 37 ± 0. 48), (1. 65 ± 0. 51), (1. 39 ± 0. 43), (1. 23 ± 0. 41) score (t=5. 747, 8. 022, 2. 806, 3. 362,respectively;P<0. 01); the negative coping scores of patients with mental disorder was (1.04 ±0.50) higher than (0.79 ±0.60) of patients with mental health (t= -2.36,P<0.05). Conclusions Patients with nodular goiter had poor mental health and negative coping style, which is related with social support and psychological health of nodular goiter patients.
