Qualitative research on occupational identification of full-time postgraduate nursing students

Abstract:
Objective To describe the real feelings about occupational identification of full-time postgraduate nursing students, in order to provide reference for hospital administrators and nursing educators.Methods in-depth ( five) interview were conducted among 18 full-time postgraduate nursing students individually by transcripts and recordings to collect the interview contents; and data were analyzed by Colaizzi thematic analysis method. Results The results of this study were divided into 3 themes and 6 aspects. The 3 themes included the motivation to pursue a postgraduate nursing degree, nursing career awareness and feeling, the personal evaluation of nursing job and the 6 aspects contained personal career development and academic pursuits, getting rid of the clinical environment, academic achievement and complex, learning postgraduate nursing course follow the trend, positive feedback (easy to find a job, higher education, fast development), and negative feedback (low social status, frequent night duty, harsh recruitment and little attention from hospital). Conclusions Generally postgraduate nursing students have high occupational expectation, but low occupational acknowledgment in society. Nursing managers should pay increasing attention on the value of the postgraduate nursing student, give full play to the advantages of talent. Postgraduate nursing education should take into account both research and practice ability to guide their reasonable employment, and improve occupational identity. Postgraduate nursing students should properly adjusted self-role, and establish the scientific concept of employment.
