Application of narrative medicine on health education of cancer patients with pain

Abstract:
Objective To explore the narrative medicine method to strengthen health education for patients with cancer pain, and analyze the effect of it. Methods A total of 544 patients with cancer pain, in which 264 of them admitted from July to December 2012 as control group and 280 of them hospitalized during March to August 2013 as experimental group, acquired NRS ≥4 in Oncology Department in Qingdao Center Hospital. Patients in the control group underwent standardized treatment of cancer pain and pain relative health education, but the experimental group strengthen health education by narrative medicine to find out the specific personal issues and take corresponding intervention based on standardized treatment of cancer pain. The effect of pain relief and patient′s satisfaction had been compared by numerical rating scale ( NRS ) and self-designed satisfaction scale for patients with pain. Results The effective rate of pain relief was 81. 1% in the experimental group compared 72. 7% in the control group (χ2 =5. 35,P<0. 05), while 98. 6% of the satisfaction rate in the experimental group contrasted 95. 5% in the control group (χ2 =4. 62,P <0. 05). Conclusions Narrative medicine method can improve the pain relief rate of pain treatment and patient′s satisfaction in clinical treatment, and is effective on health education for patients with pain. It is worth of clinical promotion.
