Influence of continuing health care education on the quality of life in patients undergoing bariatric surgery

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the impact of continuing health care education on the quality of life in patients undergoing bariatric surgery.Methods Using the self-designed pathway of continuing health care education with case management model, totals of 112 cases were divided into the control group and the experimental group.All the patients were followed up for one year.Quality of life was evaluated by SF-36 in different time points and compared between the control group and the experimental group.Patients’ compliance to health education was also investigated.Results The overall quality of life of patients including physiology, energy, social functioning, role emotion and mental health in the experimental group were significantly improved after six months and one year after bariatric surgery (P<0.05).The physiological function, body pain and general health were significantly improved until one year after surgery (P<0.05).General health and social functioning in the experimental group were significantly improved compared with those in the control group six months and one year after surgery (P<0.05).Physiology and mental health of the experimental group were significantly improved compared with those of the control group six months and one year after surgery respectively (P<0.05).Patients compliance to health education including adding nutrients, dietary modification and body exercise in the experimental group were better than those in the control group (χ2 =5.009,5.630,5.657, 9.905,respectively;P<0.05) .Conclusions For patients undergoing bariatric surgery, continuing health care education with case management model can improve the quality of life and patient compliance to health education.
