Abstract:
Objective To explore the relationship between the disease uncertainty and quality of life and negative emotions in critically ill patients ’ families. Methods Eighty-five critically ill patients ’ families were investigated with Mishel’s uncertainty in illness scale (MUIS) and the MOS item short from the health survey (SF-36).Results The scores of MUIS in critically ill patients’ families were relatively high. The total score and the dimensions ambiguity , complexity, lack of information and unpredictability of MUIS were (113.65 ±11.64), (41.34 ±4.56), (23.65 ±3.46), (19.64 ±2.65) and (15.34 ±2.56), respectively. The scores of emotional functions and energy were (57.65 ±8.46),(53.64 ±8.65).The scores of SDS and SAS were (57.65 ±5.46),(56.64 ±5.65).The total score of MUIS, ambiguity, complexity, lack of information were negatively related with the quality of life (r=-0.532 to -0.324, P<0.05), and positively related with SDS and SAS (r=0.376 to 0.574, P<0.05).Unpredictability was positively related with the overall health, emotional function, energy and mental health (r=0.354 to 0.441, P<0.05), and negatively related with SDS and SAS (r=-0.476, -0.489, respectively; P<0.05).Conclusions There are obvious sense of uncertainty and bad mood in critically ill patients ’ families, which significantly reduce their quality of life.An active communication should be given in order to enhance their confidence .
