Effect of continuous quality improvement on quality of teaching in emergency medicine

Abstract:
Objective To explore the effect of apply the continous quality improvement ( CQI ) on nursing student teaching in emergency medicine .Methods A CQI group was formed and held meetings of all staff nurses in emergency department , utilized brainstorming method to find problems in nurse teaching and ways to solve.Then the CQI group set plans and implemented .Totals of 216 nursing students between July 2011 and March 2012 were as observation group that received the improved teaching methods , and 237 nursing students between July 2010 and March 2011 as control group that received routine teaching methods .Then, theory and operation scores , and satisfaction of teaching of nursing students were observed after one month .Results After the intervention , theory and operation scores in observation group were significantly higher than that in control group [(89.25 ±3.43) vs (81.45 ±5.76), (91.23 ±4.16) vs (84.42 ±2.74),t =17.92, 21.08;P <0.01 ) ] .Nursing students'satisfaction on teaching attitude [ ( 22.36 ±0.87 ) vs ( 23.83 ±0.79 ) ] , teaching content [(15.72 ±1.45) vs (26.49 ±0.58)],teaching methods [(23.56 ±1.00) vs (24.54 ±0.74) ] and research ability [ ( 16.39 ±2.28 ) vs ( 24.34 ±0.59 ) ] in control group was significantly lower those in observation group , and the differences were statistically significant ( t=7.47 ,34.07 ,4.72 ,19.96;P<0.01 ) . Conclusions Applying continous quality improvement in nursing teaching in emergency medicine can effectively improve teaching quality and increase nursing students'satisfaction of teaching .
