Investigation on the mental pressure and its Influencing factors of nurses in coronary care unit

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the level of mental pressure of nurses in coronary care unit (CCU) and analyze the influencing factors and provide evidence and information for nursing human resource management.Methods A self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate 220 nurses who worked in CCU from 12 Grade A hospitals in Shanghai.The questionnaire included 30 items and covered four part contents,including fundamental information,the condition of care unit,working-hours every week,night shift,sabbatical leave and benefit of the nurses.The Cronbach' s α of the questionnaire was 0.78.Results 219 questionaire were returned and response rate was 99.5%.There were 216 valid questionnaires with a usability rate of 98.2%.Among 219 nurses,2 nurses ( 0.9% ) had a slight mental pressure,32 ( 14.8% ) nurses had a moderate pressure,97 nurses(44.9% ) had a higher level pressure,and 85 nurses(39.4 % )had heavy level pressure.There was a significant difference in mental pressure level among nurses with different education level,different working time in a week,perception of nursing workload ( P < 0.001 ).Spearman analysis indicated that perception of nursing workload was positively associated with mental pressure ( r =0.763,P =0.000).Logistic analysis indicated that it was 0.11 fold lower of nurse with junior college education than nurses with undergraduate course or more education,and it was 119.889 fold higher of nurses with large perception of nursing workload than nurses with very large nursing workload perception in the ratio of high mental pressure and higher mental pressure.Conclusions Nurses working in CCU have high mental pressure,especially the nurses with lower education degree and low family income,and it is important to allocate nursing human resources reasonably for easing nurses mental pressure.
