Influence of information support on uncertainty in illness among geriatric hemodialysis patients

Abstract:
Objective To explore the influence of information support on uncertainty in illness among geriatric hemodialysis patients. Methods A purposive sampling of 38 chronic renal failure patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis was obtained. The first 19 subjects were assigned to the control group, the other 19 subjects were assigned to the experiment group. The control group received the routine information, while the experiment group received the information support according to information support guideline. All subjects were asked to answer the Mishel' s Uncertainty in Illness Scale at the day of admission and the day before discharge. Results Before the intervention, there was no statistical meaning in uncertainty of llness. After the nursing intervention, there was significant decrease in the mean rank of scores of uncertainty in illness on the day before discharge in the experiment group (P<0.05). Concluisions Informational anpport can significantly decrease the uncertainty in illness among chronic renal failure patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.
