- Abstract: Objective To explore the effect and complications of partial splenic embolization (PSE) for children with hereditary spherocytosis (HS).Methods Totally 25 HS children were treated with PSE.The changes of peripheral blood before treatment and one week after treatment were observed, and the complications and treatment measures after partial splenic embolization were summarized. Results The red blood cell count (RBC),platelet (PLT) and hemoglobin (HB) were significantly lower after treatment in 25 cases, and the number of reticulocyte count (Retic#),the percentage of reticulocyte (Retic%),total bilirubin (TBIL) and direct bilirubin (DBIL) were significantly higher. After one week of partial splenic embolization, the levels of RBC,HB and PLT increased, and the levels of TBIL and DBIL decreased. After the operation, the level of WBC increased in varying degrees.Complications included fever, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, hypertension, hemoglobinuria, stroke, reduced blood flow in the right limbs, and hematoma at the puncture site. All the postoperative complications were recovered after active symptomatic treatment. Conclusion PSE is effective in treatment of children with HS by PSE.
