Abstract:
Objective:To compare the time in demand ,failure rate and complications of radial artery cannulation utilizing ultra‐sound guidance method in infants undergoing congenital heart defect‐corrective surgery with that utilizing palpation positioning method .Methods:One hundred and two infants scheduled for congenital heart defect‐corrective surgery were randomized into two groups ,the group A(n=52) utilizing palpation positioning method for radial artery cannulation ,and the group B(n=50) utilizing ultrasound guidance method for radial arterial cannulation .The time required for puncture ,as well as the number of attempts for cannulation ,was recorded .The number of successful first attempt and incidence of complications were compared between the groups .Results:The average duration of cannulation in group A (8 .9 ± 7 .5)min is significantly longer than that in group B(4 .9 ± 3 .7)min (P< 0 .05) .The rate of successful first attempt in group B was higher than that in group A(78%vs50% ,RR=1 .56) .A total of 8 cases of artery spasm and/or hematoma appeared in group A ,however ,only 1 case in group B .Conclusions:The ultrasound guidance method ,compared with the palpation positioning method ,could reduce the duration of cannulation ,improve the success rate of puncture and reduce the rate of complications ,during the radial artery cannulation in infants undergoing congenital heart defect‐corrective surgery .
