Abstract:
The main anatomical cause of periorbital tissues aging is the gradual attenuation and relaxation of the periorbital retaining ligaments. The retaining ligaments in the periorbital region mainly include the orbicularis retaining ligament, the lateral orbital thickening and the tear trough ligament in the medial canthus region. The surgical plan regarding the periorbital ligament for lower blepharoplasty was continuously evolved and updated due to the development of its fine anatomy, and could be adjusted according to the extent and level of ligament release, and the severity of the nasojugal groove, tear trough, and eye bags. This article introduces the anatomical progress of the main ligaments in the periorbital area, and further elaborates the different treatments choices of the orbicularis retaining ligament in the lower blepharoplasty, as well as the research on the surgical and non-surgical clinical treatments of the tear trough ligament.
